Hey all! Brandon here!
I was commissioned to create artwork for Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra Showgirls, a live drag rock-and-roll musical comedy! I worked with Nancy French and D’Arcy Drollinger to come up with the 80’s girl group cartoon aesthetic for Ultra Showgirls 2017 marketing. We wanted to retain that drag edge and rocker flair. Oasis has become one of our favorite drag venues, so I was excited to work with D’Arcy! I was happy to help bring a new angle to their marketing materials. I definitely indulged in some 80s pop/rocker girl-group music as inspiration, with Blondie and Vanity 6 being some of my personal favorites. 🙂
Below are layout concepts I developed before settling on a final design!
The art was incorporated into an event poster and a tshirt design. Check out the final artwork below!
About Ultra Showgirls (from the sfoasis.com event page):
Fame, sex, gratuitous nudity, drug addiction, prostitution, live go-go girls, rock-n-roll, cat fights, murder, seduction, betrayal… and that’s just in the dressing room. Imagine Russ Meyer, Liberace and Charles Manson collaborating on a rock musical starring “Jem and the Holograms” and you have an idea of what awaits you in Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra Showgirls. Inspired and shamelessly plagiarized from “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” and “Showgirls”, this over-the-top dark musical comedy has enough poor taste references to keep any B-movie junky erect.
Featuring the music of Enrique and starring D’Arcy Drollinger, John Paul Gonzalez, Nancy French, Jane D’Oh, Bobby Barnaby, Manuel Caneri, Lavale-William Davis and Melinda Campero. With Tim Perdue, Christian Matthews, Julie Vlcek, Steve Bolinger and Peter Fogel.
Directed by D’Arcy Drollinger.
Ultra Showgirls is presented in part by SF Sketchfest! You’ll have several chances to see the show at The Oasis in San Francisco, from January 26 to February 18!
